Dr. Umar Qasim ( Associate Professor )

Umar Qasim holds a BS Computer Science and an MBA from Hamdard University, and an MS and a PhD in Information Systems from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA. He has been in the IT field for over 20 years and has taught at various post-secondary institutions in North America and Pakistan. Umar’s research and teaching interests span across various areas of Information Systems including but not limited to wireless sensor networks, databases, digital preservation, data science and information management.


Umar has extensive experience in the field of Information Technology. Currently working as an Associate Professor at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Umar is involved in teaching and research as well as serving on various committees both at the department and university level. Prior to joining UET, Umar headed the Digital Preservation program at the University of Alberta for 8 years and was responsible for internal operations and external preservation partnerships. He maintained and shared expertise on digital preservation with the the University community, and the professional community of practice at large. Before that, Umar worked at Dalhousie University, McMaster University and various other software development companies in USA for more than 10 years.


He is an active participant within the professional community. Umar has served as a track chair in a number of international conferences, as well as a reviewer/PC member for numerous well known journals, conferences, and workshops. He has also led and served on committees for several Canadian and international collaborative initiatives.
