The National Library of Engineering Sciences (NLES) organized a Book Fair on 23-24 January 2018 in the university main auditorium. The purpose of this Book Fair was to highlight the importance of books in teaching community and students, and to develop the habits of book reading.
The Book Fair was organized 4th time in the history of UET during the short span of three years. The inauguration ceremony was held at Seminar Hall of the Chemical Engineering Department on 23rd Jan 2018 at 9.30 a.m. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nizamuddin, Chairperson, Punjab Higher Education Commission was the Chief Guest. Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, Director QEC and Library, Information Technology University and former President of Pakistan Library Association was the Guest of Honour. Faculty members, officers, library staff and students were present in the ceremony. Dr. Muhammad Ijaz Mairaj, Chief Librarian delivered the welcome address and shared the contributions of the library. He highlighted the importance of the Book Fair and encouraged the faculty and students for their active participation. Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Vice Chancellor in his address urged the faculty and students to visit the stalls and recommend latest books for the library. Prof. Dr. Nizamuddin and Dr. Muhammad Ramzan highlighted the importance of Book Fair, libraries and book reading. Refreshments were served after the opening ceremony. Later on, the guests, worthy Vice Chancellor, Chairman Library Committee, Chief Librarian, Faculty, Staff and Students marched towards the UET Main Auditorium for formal opening followed by the stalls visits. A group photo with the guests and worthy VC was taken.
Mr. Syed Ali Raza Gillani, Minister of Higher Education, Government of the Punjab also visited the Book Fair and expressed that such kind of academic activities should be organized in every institution on regular basis in order to develop a reading culture in the country. Later on, a group photo with the minister and worthy VC was taken.
Forty well known publishers and vendors participated in the Book Fair and organized their stalls having books on diverse topics such as Engineering, Sciences, Management, English/Urdu Literature, Social Sciences and Islamic Studies. Different stalls of food items were also arranged to facilitate the visitors of the Book Fair. Various students’ societies also displayed their stalls whereby they arranged various academic and recreational activities to attract the students. The NLES managed all expenditures of the Book Fair via vendors’ registration fees without any financial burden on the university. The book sellers offered up to 50% discount on books for the visitors. The faculty, staff and students visited the Book Fair, purchased books, and recommended for the library as well. However, faculty participation in the Book Fair remained below the satisfactory level although requests were made via various sources including invitation cards, emails, SMSs etc.
The closing ceremony was held at the Seminar Hall of the Chemical Engineering Department. Before the Closing Ceremony an “Ilmi Mazakra” was held on the topic “Kutab Bini, Social Media aur Nai Nassal: Asraat-o-Natiaje” [Book Reading, Social Media, and New Generation: Affects and Outcome]. Renowned journalists /columnists including Mr. Naeem Masood, Mr. Isar Rana, Mr. Saleem Abid, Mr. Ijaz Muharvi and Mr. Zabihullah Balgan were participated in the debate and shared their experiences. A large number of students were present on the occasion. Mr. Nazeer Hussain, Director General, HEC, Lahore Region was the Chief Guest who in his address expressed that the Book fairs and such kind of debates are necessary to develop a reading culture among new generation. The worthy Vice Chancellor thanked the guests for participating in the discussion and appreciated the efforts of Dr. Ijaz Mairaj, Chief Librarian and Dr. Tanvir Qasim, Assistant Professor, Islamic Studies for organizing this interesting debate. Finally the worthy Vice-Chancellor distributed the shields to the guests, DSA and Chief Librarian. The Chief Librarian gifted books to the guests and presented the shield to the worthy Vice Chancellor. Refreshments were served to the guests after the closing ceremony.
Soon after the closing ceremony, Sky Lantern activity organized by ASME was performed at the University Football Ground. The Worthy Vice Chancellor thanked the students for their participation in the Book Fair and congratulated the team of ASME for organizing the Sky Lantern activity. More than 500 students flew the sky lanterns under the theme “Read and Rise”.
