M.Sc Environmental Engineering

The Master's degree course is offered on full and part-time basis. The emphasis is laid on introducing the modem trends/techniques and advanced knowledge in the field of Environmental Engineering.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The Institute of Environmental Engineering & Research seeks to educate graduates who will be ethical, productive, and contributing members of their profession and of society. This education should form the basis for professional and personal development after graduation, as encompassed by the following objectives:

  1. Master students will be capable of solving complex environmental engineering problems by applying fundamental knowledge of science, engineering, and management.
  2. They will acquire the knowledge based on instruments and techniques used for the prediction and measurement of environmental parameters.
  3. Master students will grow professionally in their careers through continued development of technical and engineering management skills.
  4. Master students will be able to develop and implement their expertise in industries, government and non-government organizations at national and international level for the sustainable development. 

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Program learning outcomes (PLOs) are the narrower statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of post-graduation. These relate to the knowledge, skills and attitude that the students acquire while progressing through the program. Following are the PLOs  for post-graduate program in IEER.

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Students of the post-graduate program will be able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex environmental engineering problems.
  2. Problem Analysis: Students of the post-graduate program will be skilled in identifying, formulating, researching literature, and analyzing complex environmental engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of natural sciences and engineering.
  3. Design/Development of Solutions: Students of the post-graduate program will be capable of designing solutions for complex environmental engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and environmental considerations.
  4. Investigation: Students of the post-graduate program will be prepared to investigate complex environmental engineering problems in a methodical way including literature survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of information to derive valid conclusions.
  5. Modern Tool Usage: Students of the post-graduate program will be capable of creating, selecting and applying appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex environmental engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The Engineer and Society: Students of the post-graduate program will be proficient in applying reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess health and safety, issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional environmental engineering practice and solution to complex environmental engineering problems.
  7. Environment and Sustainability: Students of the post-graduate program will be capable of understanding the impact of professional engineering solutions in environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Students of the post-graduate program will be prepared to apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of environmental engineering practice.
  9. Individual and Team Work: Students of the post-graduate program will be able to work effectively, as an individual or in a team, on multifaceted and /or multidisciplinary settings.
  10. Communication: Students of the post-graduate program will be capable of communicating effectively, orally as well as in writing, on complex environmental engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  11. Project Management: Students of the post-graduate program will be able to demonstrate management skills and apply engineering principles to one’s own work, as a member and/or leader in a team, to manage projects in a multidisciplinary environment.
  12. Lifelong Learning: Students of the post-graduate program will be capable of recognizing importance of, and pursuing lifelong learning in the broader context of innovation and technological developments.

Courses of MSc Environmental Engineering

The MSc Environmental Engineering syllabus consists of six compulsory courses, two elective courses and a research thesis. MSc consist of 24 credit hour course work and a research thesis of 6 credit hours. Thesis is mandatory for the degree.

Ph.D Environmental Engineering

PhD Degree is earned by course work and research. Following are the steps

  1. The student first passes a subject test held every year by the UET. The subject test is based on the different areas of Environmental Engineering (water supply, sewerage, water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management and air pollution)
  2. The course work consist of 18 credit hours courses (6 in number). Minimum cumulative CGP should be 3.3 in the course work.
  3. After course work completion the student appears in a comprehensive test.
  4. After clearing comprehensive test, student writes his/her research proposal and present before the Advanced Study and Research Board (ASRB), which evaluates the proposal
  5. After the research proposal is approved by ASRB, the student undertakes research work
  6. Student has to publish one research paper in impact factor journal
  7. Thesis must be approved by two external reviewers from the technologically advanced countries and one local reviewer
  8. Finally the student defends his research in the final viva vice examination
